Discover the story behind Australia's premier expedition company and the passionate team dedicated to revealing Earth's most extraordinary realms.
How a passion for discovery became Australia's leading exploration company
RealmSeekers began as a passion project of three University of Queensland graduates—Dr. Emma Mitchell (geologist), Michael Lawson (wildlife photographer), and Dr. James Cooper (anthropologist). Frustrated by the commercial focus of existing tour operators and the lack of scientific rigor in adventure tourism, they pooled their academic backgrounds and personal savings to create a new model of expedition.
Their first expedition in 2015—a 28-day journey through the Simpson Desert combining geological research with Aboriginal cultural documentation—attracted the attention of the Australian Geographic Society, which provided crucial early funding. Within two years, what started as weekend adventures had evolved into a full-time operation with a modest fleet of specialized vehicles and a reputation for accessing areas that other companies deemed too difficult or remote.
By 2019, RealmSeekers had established its headquarters in Cairns, strategically positioned to access both the rainforests of Queensland and the vast outback regions. A pivotal partnership with the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Trust ensured that all expeditions to culturally significant sites were conducted with proper consultation and respect, setting new standards for ethical exploration.
The company's innovative approach earned international recognition in 2020 when our cave mapping expedition beneath the Nullarbor Plain discovered three previously undocumented chamber systems. This discovery, featured in National Geographic's special issue on "Frontiers of Exploration," attracted scientific partners and expanded our team to include specialists in speleology, marine biology, and wilderness medicine.
Today, RealmSeekers operates with a core team of 15 full-time experts and partners with over 30 specialists and indigenous knowledge-holders across Australia. We've completed more than 120 major expeditions, combining adventure with meaningful contributions to scientific understanding and cultural preservation.
Our commitment to sustainable exploration has led to the development of proprietary low-impact expedition techniques and equipment, which we now share through our Field Research Academy. Looking forward, we're expanding our virtual exploration programs to bring immersive experiences to classrooms and developing adaptive equipment to make wilderness exploration accessible to people with physical disabilities.
The principles that guide every step of our journey
To reveal Earth's most extraordinary landscapes through expeditions that combine adventure with scientific discovery and cultural respect, while creating sustainable practices that protect these places for future generations.
A world where exploration fosters environmental stewardship and cultural understanding, where adventure is accessible to people of all backgrounds, and where every expedition contributes to a growing body of knowledge that benefits humanity.
We maintain the highest standards of scientific methodology in our documentation and research, collaborating with academic institutions and publishing our findings in peer-reviewed journals.
We recognize indigenous peoples as the original explorers and custodians of the lands we visit, seeking their guidance, permission, and active participation in our expeditions to sacred and culturally significant areas.
We practice and innovate minimal-impact exploration techniques, leaving each site better than we found it and dedicating resources to conservation projects in the areas where we operate.
The expert explorers behind every extraordinary expedition

With a Ph.D. in Desert Geomorphology from the University of Queensland, Emma has mapped previously undocumented geological formations across the Australian continent. Her research on the shifting sand dune patterns of the Simpson Desert has been published in Nature Geoscience.
Co-Founder & Wildlife Specialist
Former National Geographic photographer whose work documenting endangered species has won multiple international awards. Michael's expertise in wildlife tracking and photography techniques has been crucial in documenting previously unrecorded animal behaviors in remote regions.
Co-Founder & Cultural Liaison
Anthropologist specializing in indigenous Australian cultures with a focus on traditional navigation and survival techniques. James has established our protocols for respectful engagement with Aboriginal communities and leads our cultural documentation initiatives.
Marine Ecosystems Director
Leading our Great Barrier Reef conservation initiatives, Aisha holds a doctorate in Marine Biology from James Cook University. Her innovative coral restoration techniques have been adopted by conservation projects worldwide, and she oversees our underwater mapping expeditions.
Milestones that mark our journey of discovery
What explorers say about their journeys with us
Wildlife Photographer
"As someone who's traveled with dozens of expedition companies worldwide, I can confidently say RealmSeekers stands above the rest. Their scientific approach and relationships with indigenous communities gave me access to wildlife photography opportunities I couldn't have found elsewhere. The Simpson Desert expedition yielded three of my most successful gallery pieces to date."
Harvard University Anthropology Dept.
"My research team partnered with RealmSeekers for our field study of Aboriginal trading routes, and I was impressed by their meticulous preparation and cultural sensitivity. Their relationships with local elders opened doors that would have remained closed to a traditional academic expedition. The data we collected will support publications for years to come."
Family Adventure Clients
"We wanted to give our teenagers an experience beyond the typical tourist attractions. Our custom Daintree Rainforest expedition with RealmSeekers delivered that and more. The kids worked alongside real scientists collecting data, learned survival skills from Aboriginal guides, and disconnected from technology to connect with nature. It was educational and thrilling in equal measure."
